The Cardbox
So, I had a ton of leftover satin from my invitations. At first, I wasn't going to have a cardbox, because my family has never seen one, and may get confused. But, I have to do something with this leftover satin, this garage sale cake topper, and this grosgrain ribbon.... So behold, my cardbox!
Step OneFirst, I wrapped the box with tissue paper, to add a little more volume and cover up all the holes in the box.
Step TwoI cut the satin into 12" x 58" lengths. I just hot glued the seams together (it gets hidden in the ruching). My box was 10" tall, so the extra 2 inches was just enough room to glue and tape the fabric to the bottom and inside of the box.
You basically glue, then bunch the fabric a few times, glue it again, bunch it up, glue, bunch, glue......... I used roughly 4 feet of fabric for the long sides (16") and roughly 3 feet for the short sides (12"). A little more than one full yard of fabric. Step ThreeI cut a slot on the top of the box using a kitchen knife. Then I hot glued more satin to the lid, wrapping it around the edges.
Next, I hot glued grosgrain ribbon to the lid. |
Then, the finishing touches!
I stared at this thing for about a month before figuring out what it needed, without spending more than a few bucks.
I ended up adding...
Cost breakdown:
Total: $6.04
Oh yeah, for the letter cut-outs, I opened up Paint, typed "C" in 375 pt font (Perpetua). Then, in new layers, I typed "ARDS" in 325 pt font. When I was satisfied, I flipped the image and printed it onto some leftover heavy weight cardstock. Then I carefully cut out the letters with an Xacto knife, glued rhinestones to it, and glued a piece of cardstock to the back to hold it up (see top picture). Here's the file, if you don't want to DIY :)
I ended up adding...
- Rhinestones around the slot
- Acrylic buckles to the ribbon (bought from ebay)
- Cardstock cut-outs of "CARDS", with rhinestone accents
- A cake topper I got from a garage sale
